How Speaking Changed Everything for Lisa Nichols
I am constantly rooting for people who are adamant about bringing their ideas and beliefs in their head to life, even in the face of discouragement. I donât know if itâs the entrepreneurial spirit or just sheer stubbornness (the good kind đ ), but itâs really just beautiful to see.
One of my favourite things about this summit was watching women push themselves out of their comfort zones. Sometimes, a speaker would reach out in uncertainty, nervous about how their masterclass was going to turn out. We had a sixteen-year-old sign up to present one of the classes! We had people who admitted speaking wasnât their strongest skill, but they were willing to try anyway.
What many of the women may not have realised was that it was more than just âgetting out of their comfort zones.â
Learning to speakâand to do it wellâforces you to become really familiar with your story and your process.
It makes you understand yourself better, allows the lessons life has taught you to settle deeper, and makes you more aware of the knowledge you actually have.
I know I canât exactly speak for her, but I imagine this is part of what drew Lisa Nichols to the art of speaking, made her adamant. Even when she was told by her speech teacher that a desk job would be a much better option for her than speaking.
One doesnât become one of the most sought-after motivational speakers simply because theyâve got a touching story.
They get to that point because they KNOW how to tell that story, how to capture an audience.
All the same things Ms. Nicholsâs teacher had indirectly told her she could not do.
Her writing teacher was no better â he went ahead to declare that she was âthe weakest writer he had ever read.â
Can you pause for a minute and imagine what that could have done to the mind of a child?
I mean, even as adults, many of us dread criticism of our work, our businesses, our creative ideas, our lifestyle choices.
For a child whoâs just starting, probably trying to see what good would come out of anything they experimented with, it should have been her cue to turn away.
Okay, this isnât for me. Maybe Iâll try something else.
I know many would have.
But as you can tell, she didnât do that, or we wouldnât be writing about her now, would we?
But why? What was it that made her so adamant, so stubborn, if you like? So unwilling to accept those discouragement missiles?
Lisa herself has talked about what shifted her mind:
she got to the point where she was willing to completely die to any form of herself that she had been, so that she could birth the woman that she was becoming.
Having experienced poverty, a toxic relationship, single motherhood, and loneliness, she had seen some of the worst parts of life.
She had lived through dark seasons that just seemed to go on forever.
The thing with Lisa was, she decided to believe that this kind of life wasnât her lot forever.
And as she fought for more, she kept a mental record of her process.
As she began her upward climb, she would turn around to teach others just how she did it: by speaking.
By telling stories, she shares her experiences in the most honest, heart-tugging, and memorable ways.
Today, she is a millionaire, entrepreneur, New York Times Best-Selling Author, and not just a speaker but also a Speech Coach!
She is also one of the only two African American women entrepreneurs to take her company public on the stock market.
You know one reason why her story can never just fade away?
Sheâs learned how to tell it, and tell it in a way that people wouldnât forget in a hurry.
This, this right here, is the beauty of mastering public speaking.
Itâs about being aware of your process, of your journey.
Itâs about making your story unforgettable.
And let me tell you something:
when youâve mastered the art of telling your story as a businesswoman, youâre halfway to the hearts of your clients and potential clients.
For you:
If youâre still in the âI donât think I can speak in front of anyoneâ phase, rememberâŚ
That Lisaâs teacher, not even Lisa herself, did not expect that she would amount to anything as far as speaking was concerned.
Was that enough to stop her? Nope.
So youâre struggling to believe you can speak, or SELL yourself?
What is stopping you?
Will you let fear keep you from everything waiting on the other side of your courage?
Iâd like you to carefully think about that.
