ROW, ROW, ROW YOUR BOAT
Imagine standing in a room where no one sees you. Or worse, they choose to overlook your presence. This is the reality for far too many Black women, especially those paving their way in spaces less travelled.
Let me tell you a story about four incredible Black women who defied these odds in the world of competitive rowing.
Amari Randall, a Civil Engineering major, Joy Neal, a Sociology major, Baylor Henry, a Marketing major, and Olyma Desarmes, a Psychology major – four college students who dared to venture into the predominantly white world of rowing. They didn’t just step into this space; they found themselves thriving in it, even when they realised they were the only ones who looked like them.
Despite their dedication, time, and discipline, they began to feel isolated. They felt alone, outnumbered, and started questioning their place in this sport. But instead of letting loneliness silence their voices, they took action.
They created Black Rowers Amplifying Inclusion and Diversity, a community for Black women who aspire to take part in rowing but fear being the only one in the room. These incredible women turned their isolation into strength, offering support and guidance to those who share the same passion, and in doing so, they are lighting the way for countless others.
What can we learn from their story?
These four women didn’t just stay in the background; they found a way to own their space and create a community for others who are feeling just as alone.
Question to Ponder:
What is that one space where you feel left out, invisible, or misunderstood because no one can truly relate to your unique experiences as a Black woman?
What if you took that bold step to create your own community, owning the space and paving the way for others who come after you?
