She talked through her tears
"Not many people can transform a terrifying childhood into an inspiring, impactful adult life. Channelling your pain into purpose is often celebrated as a concept nowadays, but people don’t realise just how difficult it can be."
I’m not sure that while Iyanla Vanzant was growing up in a volatile environment, vulnerable and surrounded by adults who would rather harm her than protect her, she envisioned becoming the powerful force she is today.
You see, being in the wrong environment can stifle the dreams you are supposed to have. It can make you unable to see a future where you are the one being celebrated, the one with a life worth living.
But one thing Iyanla did not do was simply quit. She went from a troubled childhood to being a young divorcee to becoming a lawyer. She struggled through an abusive marriage, found the courage to walk away, and put herself through law school to become a public defender.
Here’s something I find really intriguing about her story: She didn’t feel the need to settle just because she was desperately trying to escape her past life. When she found that she wasn’t getting the fulfilment she craved from the legal profession, she decided to try another route and eventually became an author.
Her first book, Tapping the Power Within: A Path to Self-Empowerment for Black Women, aimed to teach Black women useful skills that would help them become more employable. This was where she began to discover her calling — to realise just how much she had to give through writing, speaking, and coaching.
You’d think it was automatically a smooth sailing journey from here. Unfortunately, no. Even though her first book sold really well, she went through several failed book deals, a cancelled radio show, another divorce, and the loss of her child to cancer. These events threatened to tear her apart, pushing her into a suicidal depression. Still, she pulled herself back up and used her pain to instead pen another title: Peace from Broken Pieces.
And true to the title, she found a way to make something of the broken pieces of her life, eventually rising to become a New York Times Best-Selling Author, an award-winning TV Show Host, and a highly sought-after Life Coach. Her life’s work currently centres around helping women piece their lives together and find purpose through their pain, especially through her reality show, Iyanla: Fix My Life.
You know what particularly stands out about Iyanla’s story? She found her purpose when she began to tell her story. That’s the whole point I have been making in the past few emails! Your story is your superpower, and learning how to tell it can actually transform your life and the lives of so many who will be inspired by you!
Do you see where I am getting at now?
Public speaking (and writing) isn’t just some high profession reserved for special people. It’s for everyone of us with a story that needs to be told. Especially you! Yes, YOU! You who has pushed yourself to get this far, who has inspired many without even realising it. Who has fought through barriers that threatened to define your life early? You who wake up every day and refuse to take NO for an answer. Do you see now that the world around you needs your story to be told?
Good!
Now that we are on the same page, I’ve got a great opportunity that can help you begin the speaking process: The Top 100 Black Women In Power Summit 2.0! This powerful gathering of Black women, with the sole aim of sharing stories to inspire others just like them, is only missing one really important feature: YOU. Your story is waiting to be told. Yes. And who better to tell it than you?
