Stories that often go untold!

Natalia Nicholson Google-Certified Digital Marketing Coach Founder of Women in Digital Business January 25, 2025

Have you ever poured your time, energy, and heart into groundbreaking work, making valuable discoveries—only for your story to remain unknown to most?

A few weeks ago, we went through some of the more recognizable names who have changed the course of history for women in technology here.

Today, we’ll shine a spotlight on those brilliant women whose work transformed technology as we know it, yet their names are often left out of the spotlight. Let’s dive in!

Dr. Marian Croak:

Dr. Marian Croak: In a world where video calls and remote work have become second nature, many overlook the foundational research that made these technologies possible. Dr. Marian Croak is one of those pivotal figures in the world of digital communication. She revolutionized Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, which converts voice data into digital signals, enabling voice transmission over the Internet instead of traditional phone lines.

But what makes her story even more inspiring is her humanitarian drive. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Dr. Croak developed a tool that allowed people to donate to charities from anywhere in the world—a game-changer in disaster response. With over 200 patents, Dr. Croak’s work has transformed digital networking, and her legacy continues to inspire young Black girls to dream big in the digital realm.

With over 200 patents to her name, Dr. Croak's inventions have revolutionized digital networking technologies. She is truly a hero in digital technology and an enduring inspiration to young Black girls aspiring to make their mark in the tech world.

Dr. Mae Jemison:

Dr. Mae Jemison: You might know her as the first African American woman in space, but her journey is so much more. Dr. Mae Jemison’s fascination with space began at a young age, but the path to her dreams wasn’t always easy. Despite studying chemical engineering and bagged her PhD, she didn’t stop there. She took dance classes, even training with the Alvin Ailey American Dance TheaterđŸ€©, and ultimately served in the Peace Corps, aiding vaccine research.

Her perseverance led her to NASA, where she fulfilled her dream of space travel, conducting groundbreaking experiments aboard the shuttle. Even after leaving NASA, Dr. Mae Jemison continued making invaluable contributions to humanity. She served on the Board of the World Sickle Cell Foundation, founded a firm dedicated to examining the impact of technological advancements on communities and cultures, championed the creation of a science camp for teens, and became a professor of Environmental Science at Dartmouth College.

Truly, the list goes on. If you ever wonder about the limits of what’s possible in science, technology, business, or digital communications—just look at her life and think again!đŸ’ȘđŸŒ
