For Tyra Zimmerman, the future seemed pretty straightforward: Go to school, get a nice job, and build a nice life. And that’s exactly what she did…until she landed a role as a Supervisor at the clinic she worked for. Suddenly, she began to see herself in a whole new light. Leading a team? Now those were some pretty big shoes she was stepping into!
Tyra had always worked hard since she was 16, knowing that she was capable of achieving a good life. But stepping into this senior role made her realise just how good life could get. She found herself in rooms filled with people she’d normally consider more qualified, experienced, and educated than herself. But there she was, leading alongside them, doing big things, just like they were.
This new role made her realise not only her own potential but also the untapped possibilities for Black women, if only someone would show them what was possible. She decided to become that someone. Tyra made it her mission to pass on the lessons she’d learned while overcoming her own challenges. She realised there were many ways to lead and even more ways to have an impact.
This insight led her to found Start to Seven, a community dedicated to helping young women, aged 18-25, discover their purpose and power. Through coaching, workshops, and digital resources, she guides Black women from “self-doubt to self-defined success,” offering them the chance to carve their own path to success, the kind they truly desire.
Reflection on Tyra’s story
What stands out most about Tyra’s journey is her ability to find purpose in the challenges she faced. Instead of being intimidated by stepping into a senior role, she accepted the responsibility, tackled it head-on, and discovered just how capable she truly was.
Her story is a powerful reminder that sometimes, the best way to uncover your potential is to step up when the challenge presents itself. When you stop running from discomfort and lean into it, you can unlock the success that was waiting all along.
